Type & Poster in the UK, Study Abroad

This course investigated historic poster and type trends that originated in and around England while also highlighting contemporary design trends. Students studied U.S. based poster initiative “Type Hike” and compared and contrasted poster design while looking at the posters and advertisements that were stapled and placed all over the U.K. Visits to museums, galleries, and design studios in London provided historic and contemporary perspectives. Incorporating design research, methodologies and their own personal approach, students developed a poster series which was curated in an Online blog site that reflected the research and creativity of the entire class. This course focused on the process of lateral thinking and the visualization of design problems and their solutions and emphasized effective research, imagination, originality, and execution.

During the 3-Week study abroad in London, 12 students completed 2 posters within their chosen theme. Students were required to add an Augmented Reality layer to at least one of their posters. Students experimented with and utilized Adobe Aero and EyeJack for the Augmented Reality portion. In addition to the gallery on the blog site, a printed catalog of the posters is currently being produced.

In addition to the posters she created, graduate student and WKU Alumni, Shelby Riley, was strategic in the curation of the catalog on the blog site as well as the printed version of the poster catalog. Shelby also assisted in categorizing and curating blog posts on the travel blog. As a result of her work in this and course and Media Campaigns course with Kara Williams Glenn, Shelby was recently hired as an exhibiting and marketing associate working alongside her IUPUI graduate faculty to curate work from a museum in Croatia to bring some of their objects to be displayed as traveling exhibit in Indianapolis.
